Fireflies: An Illuminating Experience at the Alt Preserve
Wednesday, July 9, 2025
8:30 p.m.- 9:45 p.m.
Alt Nature Center/Alt Preserve
2489 Whitehaven Rd, Grand Island, NY
One of the most incredible sights you'll see is a forest or meadow alive with thousands of flickering fireflies. These flying beetles use their distinctive flashing lights to attract mates, and they have long been a common feature of summer in the eastern United States. Unfortunately, their numbers are dwindling due to degradation and loss of habitat, pesticide use, and drought climate change-related drought. But all is not—yet—lost. Join entomologist Wayne Gall at the Alt Preserve on Grand Island to learn all about these amazing creatures and what you can do to ensure they continue to thrive in WNY for generations to come. Following a brief presentation in the Alt schoolroom, attendees will venture out to the preserve's native meadow for an illuminating experience.
This is a family-friendly event for kids of all ages!
